Nokia N93 Reviews are now online

The Nokia N93 is now slowly starting to surface, although here in the UK it is frustratingly only available on the o2 network (boo, hiss!) and for some time I believe (boo, hiss!).
Anyways, some people have bitten the bullet and managed to get their hands on this feature-packed handset. With a 3.2 megapixel camera with 3x optical zoom, DVD-like quality video recording, 3D accelerated graphics, WiFi, UPnP and landscape mode this really was a much anticipated smartphone from Nokia.

It all looks so good on paper, the pre-production reviews by Mobile-Review and All About Symbian even confirmed that it really was as good as we hoped, but sadly since the handset officially launched it appears that again Nokia have released another handset that doesn’t live up to expectations!

Hands on reviews from My-Symbian and Symbian Freak tell a different story. It would appear that the 3.2 megapixel camera is nowhere up to the job with very bad pixelation on images. This is such a disappointment, as the handset did seem to be the ultimate smartphone. What could have gone wrong from those pre-production images that made us drool to these fuzzy pictures? Symbian Freak seem to be think that the issue is hardware and that it is unlikely to be resolved by a firmware update. This I find hard to believe as All About Symbian reviewed a version of the handset that was only 2 firmwares behind production models.

Much like the Nokia N80, it would appear that Nokia are releasing handsets with buggy firmware. Lets hope that the issue is resolved by the time that Orange get to sell them.

  1. Rafe here (All About Symbian). We’ll be revisiting the N93 wil production firmware shortly. However the important thing to realise is that while the N93 is the best cameraphone camera it is not the same as a stand alone. Digital camera are much better an compensating for operator error than the phones too.

  2. Teo is here (Symbian Freak);

    Just want to say that phone reviewed on Symbian Freak is just two weeks older than the final production firmware there is no doubt that it’s the pretty buggy firmware version and also undoubtedly some minor issues and bugs are definitely fixable with upcoming firmware versions.

    But at the same time; it’s more than obviously that some weird things and strange solutions can be fixed only with N93 successor. I’m just curious what the Carl Zeiss team have to say about,

    However, to be short, I’ll get another device with latest firmware version in next few days and I’ll let you know how it looks like but to be honest I’m not very optimistic, especially considering some reports on SF forum.

    Have a nice and long weekend..

    Cheers,

  4. I just received a production Nokia N93. The picture quality is awful, both still and motion picture. The audio quality is similarly lacking — there is a persistent hiss on the stereo microphones with loud pops at all settings. A surprising and upsetting bit of news with the much-anticipated N93. Even the WLAN functionality is a bit poor and buggy; it regularly brings down an Apple Airport 802.11g access point. The e-mail client, for example, crashes often.

  5. Just what I had suspected - the Nokia N93 has failed to live up to it’s expectation. I had high hopes for the Nokia N93, much like I did the N80 (which also was dreadful).. I have however just got my hands on a Nokia N73 - which I have to say is a stunning little handset, both in functionality and looks. Watch this space for more info…
